Session 14 - Fleeing the aftermath
The party retreats from the blaze and camps on the far side of the forest, setting watches to watch the fire die down and become safe for passage. In the morning the party sets out northward back into the charred remains of the forest. Godrin wanted to make a stop back where the crystal was found the night before, and the party found it in the same exact place. They also found a walking stick stuck upright in the ground nearby the crystal with a plank of wood hanging off it that read 'be back in 8 hours' written in common.
The crystal radiated heat though it was cool to the touch, and there were fires burning without consuming fuel. Erehorn observed that the crystal was highly magical and so was the fire nearby. Godrin shared the information he knows about the crystal, known as Magicite and how it is an extremely valuable and notoriously difficult material to harvest.
Theron got close enough to touch it and spotted the hilt of a weapon encased in this material, and attempted to chip away at the crystal, to no avail.
Mmar pointed out that something so valuable is bound to attract the attention of powerful entities, and Godrin reminded him of the Marchant's Guild Enforcers who attempted to lay claim to the land during the fire. Just as the party was reaching their conclusions some of them heard faint rumblings and shifting of ash.
The party decided to back away from the crystal as it began to shine brightly, Qunmferneffle made haste and ended up walking into a cloud of ash erupting from the ground nearby, and a smoke mephit jumped out to accost the party! Five mephitis in total rushed in to engage and the party made relatively short work of them, but did sustain some wounds.
As the battle wound down, out of the magical fire emerged a large shapeless creature made of fire, he grew hands and a face and made his way towards the party. Godrin used the stonemen's clay Golems to engage the fire creature, but he moved right through them as they swung at him, charring their bodies. Burning several party members as it went through them, and burning anyone who attacked, it radiated dangerous heat and fire.
Suddenly, a large wooden door appeared out of nowhere right next to the crystal, and out stepped a young human male dressed in cloth armor and wielding a tome at his side, he retrieves his walking stick and turns to sett the situation set upon the party. After some brief words and an even briefer introduction, he teleported toward the fire creature and contained it within a magical prison.
The fire creature raged against the prison, but them began attempting to compress itself in on itself, forming a bright hot nucleus of heat. After a few attempts, he succeeds and blinks out of existence with a flash. Elarod introduces himself in a bit more detail, stating that is he the local wizard of Embermill and invites the party back to his lodge.
The party has many questions for him, what started the fire? why is there a weapon hilt in the crystal? what is the crystal? how can we destroy it or move it? how did it get here? Elarod appears to have all the answers luckily.. the crystal did. the weapon probably spawned the growth of the magicite. the crystal is a from of magicite but a dangerous kind. the crystal may need its polar opposite to break it open. he suspects the frost giants cast it here to gain the attention of their foes, the fire giants. The dagger in the magicite is a fabled weapon that was forged in the core of the planet by the first fire giant lords, and it was forged to fight the frost giants, the frost giants also had a dagger forged at the peak of the highest mountain to combat the fire giants, and both daggers were diametrically opposed.
After a short talk, the party and Elarod moved to vacate the area and head to Embermill when suddenly, an earthquake struck and the ground around the crystal was raised 50 feet into the air up a sheer cliff face, Elarod politely asked the party to hurry, as further walls of dirt and stone were thrust high into the air behind them as they ran. Erehorn was caught by one such wall and flipped head over foot, but luckily landed safely on the same side of the wall as the party.
Once they reached the road nearby, Elarod summoned forth a sheep. Qumnferneffle was delighted and began to shear the sheep to ride it. Elarod summoned forth a horse and cart and the party loaded up to depart for Embermill.
After arriving in Embermill the party was escorted to an outhouse. Elarod instructed everyone to cram inside. all 5 party members and two animal. After a very short discussion, Godrin's wolf slaughtered Qumnferneffle's sheep and the party crammed into the outhouse in a most uncomfortable fashion. Elarod closed the door and told them to close their eyes.
After a moment, the party found themselves in a magnificent foyer of a mansion, and Elarod invited them to come to the lounge to sit by the fire and discuss their further plans together.
