Session 16 - A Day in Embermill
The party rested in the luxurious magical mansion of Elarod the wizard. Theron left the mansion while the party conversed with the wizard about what to do next, and struck out in the town to gather information.
They asked many questions about the nature of the fire and the mysterious crystal, the fortress that rose from the ground, and what they should do next. Elarod said that the only way to break that crystal open is to retrieve the polar opposite - an ancient heirloom dagger of the frost giants. Getting the dagger would be tricky, but suggested his friend the local blacksmith could help as he has some familiarity with the giants. Faehorn also mentioned that the journals also mentioned a lab of Solomir in the Winterspine Mountians, and that it may be a good opportunity to explore. Elarod mentioned he'd be able to assist in any way he could, but he wanted to go out to the fortress and scout around a bit first.
Theron in the meantime went about questioning the locals about Elarod and his role in town. Most locals were uninterested in Elarod or his comings and goings, but were aware of him and regarded him as a local, though a recent one. Theron decided to ride back out to the crystal and the fortress that rose from the ground in the forest, and rented a horse to ride out that evening, but shortly after arriving and walking around a bit, the area spooked him and he came back to town to meet up with the party.
Qumnferneffle asked Elarod to identify some of his items, and Elarod was baffled as to why the party couldn't identify them themselves. He pointed to a magical ledger in his entry hall that catalogued the party's possession brought with them, and it said that Faehorn had a tome of identify on his person. The party figured out that he had been carrying the magical book granted to him by Corellon Larethian for weeks now and had payed it no mind. After departing the mansion in the morning, they were able to read the book in sunlight and discovered that it allows for three casts of any combination of three spells - Identify, Detect magic, and Augury.
The party went to visit the local blacksmith next, Balbon and his apprentice Byron Sturmer. The party wasn't sure how to exaplin the situation to Balbon but eventually they mentioned they were friends of Elarod and were looking to visit the Frost Giants. Balbon mentioned that he knows a giant who many not be completely unwilling to listen to the smaller folk. He marks the location on the party's map and plots a recommended course through the mountains and snow, the hall is competantly drawn and labelled 'Myton's hall'.
Balbon also mentions that they'd need to show a token to the Giants to prove their worth, and provides them with a shining round crystal wrapped carefully in a cloth and kept in a small reinforced box. The party then departs to stock up on winter gear and extra supplies for the journey.
On their way out of town, they are approached by the same group of Winter Watchers that they met near the fire the night before, they looked ragged and tired, but were telling townsfolk to return to their homes. They recognized Durgan and he pulled them aside to share the reason for their caution - there have been giants spotted in the forest wandering down from the slopes towards town, and the watchers suspect they are sick with Icerot. The party deicdes to leave town anyway and brave the danger.
