Session 24 - The Fort Eternal
The party awakens refreshed and sets out to be transported to retrieve the blade of hissith from Solomir's abandoned laboratory in the mountains. Hissith grants the party a gift before they depart, a small clockwork cylinder, with dials on the side and what appears to be a button on the face. Hissith reports that years after she was turned to stone, she was found by the Ghaleb Duhr and she had them stonemeld into Solomir's fortress and obtain the cyinder - she does not know what it does, but she does know that it was very important to the function of his lab and shortly after she took it, all traffic to and from the lab stopped entirely.
The party and the child step onto a stone pad that appears to have been intentionally fashioned for teleportation, and in a flash of snow and ice, the party found themselves once again atop a frozen peak, but ahead of them was a massive dome-shaped snow bank, with the top of the peak poking out of the top hundreds of feet above.
After some debate, and the planting of a magic bean which grew a small birds nest which the party then hard-boiled, Qumnferneffle shot a fireball at the dome near the ground closest to the party - which instantly evaporated the snow, creating an opening for the party to pass through into the underside of the dome.
As the party went to move onward, Mmar noticed that the child had gone missing, and begins to retrace their steps to find him - but it seems he never made it through the portal. With no way to return the party decided they have no choice but to move on and will have to return to Hissith directly after.
Moving onward, the party passes through their newly created gateway into the inside of the dome - as they do, they see an army charging toward the fortress, frozen in place as if time has stopped. Even the snow falling within is suspended in mid-fall. The army appears to have suffered moderate losses but is pushing strong, their front lines forming a shield wall and behind them are several ranks of archers, drawing their bows to fire upon their adversaries - a row of mechanical shield guardian golems forming their own shield wall, but appear to be generating a magical barrier of some sort as well. Many dead soldiers lie at the feet of their shields.
After a quick survey, the party begins to tinker with the clockwork cylinder and discovers that it's function appears to be able to resume the flow of time, but each side of the battle exists on separate timelines, so the party begins to experiment on how they can use it to progress through the area to the fortress. After retreating a safe distance away, the party uses their new control over time to allow the invading army to fire several rounds of arrows toward the golems - some of which do strike their target's heads poking over their shield wall, but it does not appear to take them down. The party then advances the time flow on the golem's timeline, and discovers some of them struck by the arrows fall over defeated, breaking their shield wall and allowing a path through their defenses to the fortress.
Beyond the shield wall they see that the portcullis to the main entrance is closing and a lone robed figure is ducking under it to pass back inside, though the portcullis is still several feet above his head and he doesn't need to duck he does appear to be running from the battle outside. Moving past this figure inside the fortress the party comes upon a courtyard, where yet another battle is frozen inside, a half dozen soldiers are running across a stone bridge toward two golems on the other side of a 25' chasm. Two bolts of lightning are arcing their way towards the solider from two balconies on the golem's side of the chasm, but have been stopped solid in the air.
