Session 27 - The 4th Dimension
The party ascends the iron spiral staircase to one of the raised metal platforms. On this platform are several glass display cases and desks with many journals and notes written on paper strewn about, as well as several bookshelves filled with bound books. The party investigates for a short time before seeing/hearing Mmar coming towards the platform, with the wizard from the library leading him, looking rather concerned.
The wizard insists they the party explain themselves, and seemed indignant that he'd never seen them or conversed with them before now. As the party argues among themselves about their reasons for being here, the wizard quiets them to listen for movement on the platform above. He appears worried when he hears a bestial snorting noise coming from above, and begins to quiety sneak up the iron spiral staircase.
The party follows close behind, and the wizard peeks over the top of the stairs, and look back at the party in fear exclaiming "It's loose..." before blinking out of existence. Mmar begins explaining to the party how he arrived with the wizard for some reason, and as the party indulges his storytelling, a flesh floating face slowly descends from the edge of the platform, revealing many tentacles and eyestalks. Suddenly it opens its center eye and Godrin and Nithion are accosted by a wave of terror, Nithion seems aghast at the sight of such a monstrosity, and freezes - just as the creature looses three different ray attacks at the party, sending Thoradin to the ground immediately.
The party begins to ascend to the platform and battle the creature, and shortly thereafter the creature explodes, sending two halves of itself flying in different directions, making two copied of itself. Each round the creatures continued to loose rays of various energies at the party, doing damage or afflicting them with various impediments, until the party finally defeats them both, causing a sizable ares of force damage as the creatures explode with waves of energy.
Recovering after the battle, the party takes a moment to investigate the platform - finding three more display cases, one of which is broken open, presumably containing the creature. Also on this platform is a large desk, and two mechanical control consoles. The platform extends all the way to the tip of the large floating clockwork pyramid in the center of the room, prodtruding from the top of which appears to be the handle of a weapon.
Mmar stepped over to try and remove the handle, but noticed the blade was embedded into some sort of crystalline object inside the clockwork container. Using the gem given to him by Boros the dwarven blacksmith in Embermil, he pulled on the handle and the item seemed to break apart from the inside with a loud crack, and he pulled out a large chunk of crystal still attached to the handle. Directly after, the party hears creaking and cracking within the object and the metallic clanking of metal objects hitting the stone floor - the container is breaking apart.
Mmar makes a beeline to the exit door with a chunk of crystal about the size of his entire body, smashing it on the ground along to way to attempt to break the crystal off and reduce it's size, but the crystal only dented the stone floor severely with his enormous strength, the crystal seemingly unscathed. Realizing he has no way to pen these magical doors, he looks back to the party, who appear to be still investigating on the platforms.
Thoradin takes a particular interest in a pair of floating swords - they appear to be of completely foreign make and move erratically as if wielded by an unseen swordsman within the confines of their oversized glass display case, on the bottom of each of which are various magical formulae for protection spells. He summons all his might and strikes a powerful blow, shattering not just the glass, but also the magical barrier reinforcing the glass. The swords instantly take flight and shoot out of the case into the air above the party, and continues to fly in patterns above them.
The third oversized case contained a swirling mass of light and darkness, around 4 feet across, the party decides to leave this one alone in case it is unstable or dangerous, and feels that there is no way to safely investigate further.
Qumnferneffle also takes interest in some of the smaller cases on the lower platform, and easily smashes the glass to a case containing a clockwork object that constantly moves and takes different shapes by disassembling and reassembling itself as it sits on the floor of the case. He reaches out to take the object and put it into his pack, but quickly realizes it's stuck to his hand! Unable to shake it off it begins to tear at his flesh and dig deep into his hand, he panics as the party begins suggesting they remove the arm, and tells them that everything is fine, wincing. After a few rounds of taking damage, the clockwork seems to have constructed itself in place of his hand, and he maintains full use of the hand, which is now more machine than gnome.
The other cases contain some crystal samples, which Thoradin scoops into his pack, a ring with a note that says 'do not use', which Qumn takes and quickly hides within his pack, and a tumor-like fleshy pulsating object, which the party restrains Qumn from touching given the last thing he touched is now trying to take over his body.
The party is suddenly acutely aware that the large floating clockwork object in the center of the room has really begun to come undone by the cacophony of noise as pieces cascade to the ground onto a forming heap of brass gears pipes and panels. Suddenly, another crack is heard, and a huge chunk of glowing whit crystal falls, and hits the floor with an explosion of light. The party goes unconscious.
