Session 5 - Omalo's shop of Wonders!
Theron joined Zarzeros in visiting the local arcanist and artificer Omalo
and his 'magnificent shop of wonders'. Omalo had a bit to say about the mask, and
offered the party his advice to buy one of his scrolls of identify to
know exactly what it is before they risk attuning to it. Zarzeros intimidated Omalo and asked for a 'donation' to his efforts of saving the world from destruction by this cult.
Omalo, being a shrewd businessman, was not swayed but he was afraid that the single-minded paladin might cause trouble in his shop, and instead humbly asked for a favor to counter his loss of profit. After all, he cannot give away his inventory to counter every world-ending cult that comes into town - instead the party was asked to help escort his courier who's run into trouble and camped outside of town, even offering some gold to sweeten the deal. With a short letter describing where his courier said he'd be, the party regroups with Godrin and ventures forth shortly before nightfall.
Not soon after leaving town, the party finds the camp and the cart, but suspects someone had tampered with the crates of items after a cursory search but isn't sure why. Godrin finds some tracks leading out of the camp toward a ravine a moderate distance away. The tracks lead to a ravine and the party begins to hear voices ahead. Quickly dispatching the two guards at the gate, they appear to be bandits from a local gang known as the 'Splinters'. With them guarding the entrance to a cave, the party could only assume their courier was inside.
The cave is completely dark and silent - the party cautiously ventures deeper, ready for a fight. After Theron scouts ahead with his darkvision, he reports a large room ahead and the party positions to turn on the lights. Revealing themselves to be blocking the only means of escape, the party finds three bandits inside, and the courier with a knife to his neck by the largest of the three. After an extremely brief exchange of words, the party deftly bombards the knife-wielder with arrows and knives until he's staggered and knocked away from the courier - then they press the assault until none are alive except one bandit who surrenders and the courier. The bandit is interrogated briefly and then executed for his crime of being a bandit.
The courier divulges that he had been instructed to remove the crate contents and bury them were he to stop for the night, and quickly reveals the location of the buried goods. Theron helps the courier dig them up and put them back in the crates while Zarzeros retrieves the party's horses.
Godrin notices that the insides of the glass bottles are coated with a very even coating of dust or grime, and Theron tries to pocket one unsuccessfully. Godrin threatens to tell Omalo that the courier was in on the heist and he's working with the bandits, but the courier panics and stubbornly refuses to discuss it further until he can speak further with Omalo.
Zarzeros returns from retrieving the horse for the cart and the party returns to town. Omalo pays the party, true to his word, and thanks them for his business. Theron asks Omalo for a favor in return, and Omalo tells Theron to return to his shop tomorrow and he'll deliver.
