Session 3 - High noon at the Temple
Mmar awakes in the forest nearby the temple with no memory of how he got there. He spots several hooded and robed figures standing near the treeline just inside the temple grounds, and is shortly joined by Haldruin, who Mmar is unaware has been found dead in the temple earlier. They decide to approach carefully but keep their distance.
The rest of the party descends the temples upper reaches to see hundreds of hooded and robed figures circling the temple, and spots a large fire near the front entrance to the temple grounds. They decide to get closer and investigate the threat, but found a small group of goblins hiding inside the main foyer briefly gave them pause. Deciding to end their lives with arrows, the party ably handled them and spent some time watching the pile of burning goblin bodies from the from entrance of the temple debating their next move. After consideration and some debate, the party notices that the cultists are now dragging a hulking creature form the forest, tied with ropes and apparently unconscious. It appeared to Godrin to be a hulking horribly mutated Ankheg.
Mmar and Haldruin spied the main cultist, wearing a mask made of the skull of a large deer with antlers, as he began cutting patterns into the flesh of the creature, and though they suspect he was aware of their presence, he ignored them to continue his macabre work.
Theron, after much debate among the party within the temple, just strolled out into the open and approach the cultists as they began to drag the creature's body into the burning pyre, and the party began firing from cover near the Temple to engage the nefarious cult and cease their devious ritual.
Mmar threw a javelin at the creature from the forest, as it began to rake across the bonfire, the combination waking the creature. It broke free as the rest of the party began to eliminate the cultists holding the ropes to keep the creature in place. The creature rampaged, slicing and severing through the cultist ranks, as the party attempted to keep their distance and let the creature do as much of the work as they could. Haldruin was not as intimidated and proved his battle prowess as a cunning fighter, tripping foes and helping to maneuver the party into position to make short work of their foes.
After the creature decapitated the cult leader, the runes on its body began to glow and pulse with power, but the party made short work of it since it had been damaged significantly in the battle with the cultists. After it fell, the party reunited with Haldruin who explained that Corellon had given him another chance at life after sacrificing himself to protect the temple from the evil unknown threat.
The party then parted ways with Haldruin as he went to report to Everbranch on the corruption at the temple, and the party went to return to Springpointe. After traveling a short distance, the party made camp and was approached by two fellow travelers in the forest - both wearing crimson leather armor emblazoned with the symbol of a silver wolf with a sword piercing its forehead. A human and dragonborn asked to share camp with the party for the night, as there is always safety in numbers. The two introduced themselves as Lozrat and Malik, hunters who are pursuing prey in the area, and proved to be a welcome source of entertainment and fellowship for the evening.
