Session 7 - The Cathedral Study
Shortly after entering the portal, the party finds themselves in a pitch-black cavernous room, and they find Cumnfernuffle at their side for some mysterious reason. Before they have much time to get their bearings, several score of rats scurry to line up into a grid formation,
and they speak telepathically to the party, asking who they are.
Erehorn remarks that he is the chosen one and is here to fulfill his prophecy as their champion. The rats seem agitated but proceed to express their thankfulness for his help in overtaking the surface world for their kind. The rats then repeat their question to the rest of the party regarding their purpose, and decide that they are not part of the prophecy and are surface dwellers invading to foil their plans. Suddenly, thousands of rats pour from two doorways on the far side of the room, surging as amorphous mounds of rat bodies.
The party gets into position and Godrin and his wolf jump up on the table to survey the area, finding some kindling in a large brazier in the center of the table/room. He decides to light the brazier hoping it will affect the oncoming swarms. After some light combat while Godrin gets his flint from his pack, the fire ignites and the swarms are driven back, retreating while remarking about the light of creation.
The party searches the room and table and finds a large stone table in the middle of the room, covered in old parchment and books as well as several journals describing all sorts of magical and scientific findings on various regions of the continent, but the journals are long and densely written, Erehorn remarks it could take a whole day to review them in even a cursory manner. After a quick search and a few lit torches, the party finds this room to be a huge study or library.
Items gained:
8 ancient scholar's journals
The party continues to explore the area and proceeds down one of the two doors that leads to stairways going both upwards and downwards, and on their way down the stairs going single-file, two extraordinarily large rats run between their legs. The party swings at them as they pass, damaging them a bit as they bound up the stairway. The party doesn't have much time to react before they are met at the bottom of the stairs by two humanoid ratfolk - brandishing shortswords and hand crossbows. The party positions for a fight, and then are quickly ambused from behind by two more ratfolk.
After a long fight, much fancy footwork, a potted plant mishap, and many expended spells later, the party is victorious. They explore the rooms at the bottom of the stairs to find two magical barriers and a large brazier like the one in the main hall. Theron decides to touch the magic walls, and it seems to blink him out of existence - until he returns behind the party explaining how the magic barriers seem to phase one into the ethereal plane. After the battle the party recooperates in that chamber for a short time while studying the journals and magical barriers.
